Asset Barcode Generator FAQ

Asset Barcode Generator: How do I keep bulk asset tag numbers unique?

Asset Barcode Generator FAQ: Keep a master register of issued asset IDs and start each new batch after the last number used. Use a consistent prefix and number padding, such as AST-001. The generator rejects duplicate CSV IDs within a batch, but does not check previous batches or your equipment register. Avoid reassigning a retired asset’s number to a different asset.

Keep one numbering record across every batch

Before generating a batch, check the latest issued ID in your equipment register. Record the prefix, first number, last number and print date for the new batch. Keep department, location and current owner in the register so those details can change without changing the asset’s identity.

The standalone generator checks duplicate IDs within an imported CSV, not against earlier downloads. Reserve a number range when more than one person is preparing labels. If you replace a damaged tag, reprint its existing ID for the same asset; do not assign that ID to a different asset after disposal.

Try it with your own equipment

Use your own IDs, optional company branding and the label dimensions you plan to print. The free tool generates your labels in your browser.
